Florentijn Hofman

An all time favourite and a put a smile on your facer, the work of Florentijn Hofman is clever, whimsical and fun. Growing up and revisiting old places of childhood memories, I often find myself thinking, “man, this used to seem a lot bigger.” This is exactly how I felt when I visited a relatives home in Japan, where once I remember huge aquarium size fish swimming in a lake at the back of a house. Good few years later, the once lake is now a pond with a few gold fish.

It’s all relative, like with most things in life, really. But it is amazing how my memory still serves and is convinced that the now pond was a lake… that day of standing by the lake and seeing the fish is so vivid and strong. It is probably the same with stuffed animals and childhood objects. Bears and monkey toys were friends that you can relate to and rely on.

Seeing these works is pure pleasure as it takes the opposite approach and the scale is increased. Not only would it be amazing to have one of these guys around your house, I love that its pure and simple gesture of scale allows to bring back various memories and offer different points of views. It’s equally a nostalgic moment but I find ultimately that its more of a dream come true.
